6 Creative-Writing-Exercises

Being a writer is a great vocation for many people. This is because it is a way for people of different backgrounds and viewpoints to share their ideas with the world. But as great as being a writer can be, it can still be an extremely difficult prospect. This is especially true if you are just starting out as a writer. So before you set out on becoming a writer, you should train yourself in all the finer points of writing.

Here are 6 Creative Writing exercises to awaken your inner writer.

1. Be a wide reader!

When it comes to growing as a writer, you are not just limited to your ability to write. If you want to be a truly complete writer, you will need to be as wide a reader as possible. Because the more you read, the more ideas and concepts that you can bring to bear on the writing process. So be a wide reader. Read as much as you can and don’t limit yourself to just one genre. Spread out your interests and read on a daily basis. That way, once you do decide to write a book or create content for your author blog you will have a myriad of ideas and concepts to choose from.

2. Try your hand at poetry

Try your hand at poetry

Aside from being a wide reader, it is also a good idea to try your hand at poetry. This is because poetry is a great way to loosen up your writing skills and develop a writing flow that you are comfortable with. It will also make your writing so much more efficient and helps you avoid clunky sentence work. You can also read the works of the great poets of the past. The works of Oscar Wilde, Pablo Neruda and T.S Eliot are a good place to start. All in all, poetry is a wonderful way to add nuance to your writing sessions.

3. Create a cast of characters

Yet another great way to make your writing sessions more fun and immersive is to create a cast of characters. These characters don’t really have to be for a particular story. Instead, this exercise is meant to enhance your character writing skills. By practicing your character writing skills on a consistent basis, you will be able to create more nuanced and layered characters. Who knows? Maybe one of the characters will be the center point of a great story one day.

4. Try out fan fiction writing

Fan fiction writing is yet another great way to make your writing sessions interesting. This is because it entails you to create a story out of an already existing story. So if you have a favorite novel or short story, you can try your hand at writing a fan fiction about it. It will help you to expand your writing style, and make the writing process more innovative.  Just remember not to print it out or sell your story, because you will get into a lot of trouble if you do that.

5. Practice your dialogue writing

If you want to be a truly complete writer, you will need to improve your dialogue writing skills. Your dialogue writing is important because it helps add more layers to a character. The dialogue in a way, helps the readers get to know more about a character’s personality and motivations.  It also sets the pace and overall feel of a setting. So if the dialogue between your characters becomes somewhat tense and aggressive, then the overall feel of the scene becomes more tense and aggressive. Overall, dialogue writing is really important and should be practiced on a consistent basis.

6. Join a writing community

Although honing your writing skills through drills and mental exercises is effective, it is also important that you gauge your work through other people’s reactions. This is why you should join a writing community. The writing community could be a local one, or it could be an online one, it does not really matter. What matters is that you trust your writing community, and that they give you honest and constructive criticism on your work.

Conclusion

If you want to reach your full potential as a writer, you should make sure that you hone your writing skills to a sharp point. With these exercises, you’ll be able to reach your full writing potential.
